There are generally considered to be 2 types of Laminate flooring available.
1. Direct Pressure Laminates.
This type of floor is probably the most common in the market place with a very high profile established due to home improvement programmes. The surface of the panel is a Melamine impregnated paper with a photo of a wood effect floor bonded under heat and pressure to either an H.D.F. (high density fibreboard) or Chipboard core with a balancing paper on the reverse. This type of product is mass-produced and is the entry level on the hard floor market. There are many wood effect finishes available and with the density of the core this product is generally hard wearing. The disadvantages of this type of product are that there are duplications in the finish, the floor can chip and be a problem to repair.
2. High Pressure Laminates.
Similar in its appearance to the direct pressure laminate but it has a more durable surface with the top layer being a 0.5mm thick laminate similar to that of kitchen worktops. This product is likely to be used in a much more harsh environment than a domestic application such as an office or boutique where there would be higher traffic. Finishes available are more limited but generally available in the more popular wood effects.
